Casey is founder & creator of Saint Jane, a CBD infused luxury beauty Brand. Experience Beauty & bliss!

You career span is impressively diverse: you’ve been a TV producer, wine innovator and beauty brand creator.  Where did the idea for Saint Jane come from? Looking back, was it an organic path?

I always knew I wanted to start my own brand one day, but it wasn’t until California legalized cannabis that I was passionate enough about an ingredient to actually take the leap. It’s not often an ingredient for skincare emerges with as much promise as this one. As I researched, I found that while CBD has extraordinary benefits for skin, the way it was being marketed wasn't doing its wellness potential justice. This is such a luxurious botanical with truly powerful benefits—so I created Saint Jane, an elevated, luxurious line of products that honor its healing properties. The name Saint Jane was inspired by that as well; we’re the “innocent”, healing side of Mary Jane, and our namesake is Jane Frances de Chantal, a woman who lived in the 1500s and was anointed into sainthood for healing those others wouldn’t touch.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? Worst advice?

I recently heard that when you have lots of energy, you’ll attract all kinds of people. Some will be as positive and energetic as you, and some will try to take your energy. When you’re an entrepreneur, you can’t afford to have that energy drained. You have to know when the right time is to break ties with those people and make space for ones who will energize you.

I think the worst advice I’ve ever received is probably that you should find a career and stick to it. You never know when the next amazing, life-changing opportunity will come, and if you stick to something you’re not totally happy with, you might miss it.

You must juggle so many things in a day; how do you stay creatively invested? Do you have any daily routines that help get you started?

I’m so passionate about product development, brand building and innovation that staying creatively invested and inspired is easy. But keeping the balance and juggling it all is not…to stay sane, I have to work out every morning. It just helps relieve tension and stress and clears my head for the day ahead.

What is your personal philosophy on beauty & skincare?

That beauty truly does come from the inside out. When we first started Saint Jane, we had a tagline that said, “first comes bliss, then comes beauty,” and that’s what I believe. First comes happiness and self-love, then comes outward beauty.

Can daily skincare routines be creative, or inspire creativity? What are some of your skincare go-to’s when you feel uninspired?

Absolutely! I’m always trying new products and ingredients, mixing and layering and testing. Just playing around with something new is so inspiring to me, but when I feel like I’m in a rut I’ll usually do face masks with my girls.

You are passionate about the beauty benefits of CBD. Can you tell us little more about why it’s so beneficial for the skin? What are some things beauty consumers should know? Why should people start using CBD?

CBD is a very potent anti-inflammatory, and when applied topically it can help reduce skin conditions like joint pain, rosacea, eczema and cystic acne. At Saint Jane, we use full-spectrum CBD which means we use the whole hemp plant (leaves, stems, flowers). We do that because we believe in what’s called the Entourage Effect, where the calming, soothing effects of CBD are amplified by all the other amazing cannabinoids in the plant. We use hemp because it naturally contains higher concentrations of CBD and much lower concentrations of THC (what gets you “high”). While CBD is amazing for all kinds of ailments, consumers need to be very careful about where they source their CBD. Cannabis is a bio-accumulator, which means it removes toxins from the soil (hemp was actually planted in Chernobyl to remove the nuclear waste from the soil). So you want to make sure you know where the plant was grown and in what kind of environment, because if it’s not using clean processes you run the risk of ingesting chemicals like pesticides or metals like lead.

Saint Jane has grown to include beauty serum, body serum and now lip gloss. Where do you get your inspiration from when creating new products? Which of the products are you most proud of?

Whenever we create a new product, the first thing we think about is what other ingredients would pair well with CBD, and what would enhance its calming, soothing properties. We also think about whether that product would benefit our clients if it had CBD in it. Not everything has to have CBD, and we really want to be careful and judicious about what products we introduce to market.

What aspect of creating and developing your own brand still excites you?

Everything! Every day there’s a new challenge to solve and a new opportunity to build something even more incredible. I love that Saint Jane as a brand really represents who I am as a person, and while it’s definitely the most challenging project I’ve done, it’s by far the most rewarding.

What has been the most surprising thing about growing your own business?

When I started Saint Jane, I thought that it would be a nice side hustle…little did I know that it would quickly become my main hustle. It is all-consuming. Everyone tells you it will be, but you have no idea what that feels like until you’re doing it.

How would you describe the experience you want people to have with Saint Jane?

I want everyone to feel like they’re elevating their daily routine when they use our products. Taking care of yourself should be a luxurious ritual, and we want Saint Jane to be part of that ritual.

What advice would you give someone starting their own business?

Make sure you are so, so passionate about what you’re doing. You’ll have to give it your all, but as long as you’re ready to do that, there’s no reason not to start a business.
